There are 13 Branch Libraries, including the main library, Pack Memorial, that have served Buncombe County for more than 125 years.
HOURS: Buncombe County Libraries are open Tuesdays from 10a – 8p, Wednesdays through Fridays from 10a – 6p, and Saturdays from 10a – 5p.
They are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
If any Buncombe County Branch Library does not have the item you’re looking for, they can special order it from any of the other branches. All branch libraries provide internet access and have a large collection of books, audio books, DVDs and CDs to check out, along with many other items.

Black Mountain Library
Built in 1968 and renovated in 2009, this branch is conveniently located in downtown Black Mountain within easy walking distance to restaurants and shops. You’ll find a comfortable reading area, ample parking, plus a 120-seat community meeting room. The Black Mountain Library also has an ongoing used book sale and loans out fishing rods, makes reservations for their in-house piano, and has a seed library.

East Asheville Library
This great neighborhood library is adjacent to Asheville Fire Station #8 in the Haw Creek community, right off Tunnel Road. Newly built in 2021, the library is the second largest in the county and the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building built by Buncombe County Government. The East Asheville Library includes study rooms for small group projects and is known for its well-curated music, graphic novel, and Spanish materials collections.

Enka-Candler Library
The Enka-Candler Library is a great family destination adjacent to a lovely community green, post office, and shopping center. It has a 50-seat meeting room, and a spacious indoor area to relax with a book.

Fairview Library
Built in 1999, this beautiful, 75,000-square foot library has a spacious reading lounge, exhibition space, and an outdoor patio seating area. The Fairview Library’s expansive children’s reading section features puppeteering during story times. The Fairview Library is great for children and just minutes from local restaurants and markets.

Leicester Library
This spacious library has 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. The Leicester Library has a large, comfortable reading lounge, and an exhibition space. The Leicester Library is a great family destination because of its youth section with comfortable chairs for parents to read to their children.

North Asheville Library
Originally opened in 1958, the new North Asheville Library opened its doors in 2005. The library features a reading lounge, an outside reading porch, and has a great children’s section with a dedicated computer with educational software for preteens.

Oakley/South Asheville Library
Built in 1972, this library includes a vast large-print collection, and has an on-going book sale. Story times are held each week for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers. Lego Club for school age children is the first Saturday of each month. The Oakley/South Asheville Library is a cozy library located in-between Murphy-Oakley Park and Oakley Elementary School on Fairview Road in Asheville.

Pack Memorial Library
Pack Memorial Library is located in downtown Asheville and is the main branch in the Buncombe County Public Library System. Pack Memorial is home to Bookends Used Book Store, Buncombe County Special Collections (previously the North Carolina Room), Lord Auditorium and the Thomas Wolfe Collection. More than 150,000 items are available for perusal and free check out including books, periodicals, CDs, DVDs and research materials. Internet access, free Wi-Fi, word processing and photocopy services are available.

Skyland/South Buncombe Library
Originally built in 1962, the Skyland/South Buncombe Library, located off Long Shoals Road near TC Roberson High School, was rebuilt and renovated in 2002. The library is within easy walking distance of local restaurants and antique shops. Indoor areas include a large, comfortable reading area and a large separate children’s area. The library boasts the longest running monthly book club in the County library system.

Swannanoa Library
The Swannanoa Library is a quiet, cozy library within easy walking distance to local restaurants and antique shops. It’s a great community social hub with its large outdoor playground and proximity to Grovemont Square. The library houses a 35-seat public meeting room, large comic book collection, monthly book discussion groups, and has a professional mural in the entrance featuring dozens of storybook characters.

Weaverville Library
The Weaverville Library houses an especially strong young adult reading selection and features monthly book clubs. There is also a great downstairs meeting room that can hold anything from story times to community meetings. The Weaverville Library is a great neighborhood library adjacent to local shops and restaurants.

West Asheville Library
The West Asheville Library originally opened 1953, and moved to its current location in 1997. Not only does the library house a large selection of adult, teen, and children’s literature, it also features an Hispanic outreach center, a large children’s section and a 75-seat meeting room. The library provides a branch newsletter, computer study areas, and many programs for adults and children.
